Hima Road Accident claims 32

Police says ten people have been confirmed dead in a road accident that happened last night at Kanyansi between Hiima and Rugendabala on the Kasese – Fortportal Road, PRO Rwenzori Region, ASP Vicent Twesigye has said.

The Police together with a team from the Red Cross Society responded to the scene immediately.
The accident involved 5 vehicles; UAU 700U (Premio), UBF 968T (Canter), UAU 457F (canter), UAY 793E and UAY 836Y (trailer).

Twesigye said that ten people died on spot while 33 were seriously injured and rushed to Kilembe hospital and ST Paul Hospital in Kasese for treatment, 2 have since been referred to Mbarara Regional referral Hospital for more medical attention. The cause of the accident is still being investigated and more updates will be shared in due course.

Other sources have reported that  more than 30 people are reportedly dead following last night’s road accident involving 5 vehicles at Kihogo along Hima-Rugendabara Road in Kasese District in western Uganda.

According to Uganda Red Cross, a cement truck fell on three cars before another crashed into them!
“32 dead bodies were recovered, five survivors referred were to Kilembe Hospital. The Red Cross  emergency response team working with police and UPDF led by Major Charles Nzei managed the incident,” the Uganda Red Cross Society said in a statement on Twitter.

“There was a big truck with a coffin and people on top, while a lorry full of people followed closely behind. When the car with a coffin hit another car, the lorry behind it also rammed into it causing another accident,” said an eye witness. He added, in a short interval, two other vehicles came and also rammed into the wreckage of the first accident.

A driver who was travelling from Mpondwe to Tororo, blamed the contractor of Fort Portal–Kasese Road.  He said that the road is under construction, but they did not put warning signs especially where heaps of sand and other road materials have been dumped on the roadside.
