Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has responded to Deputy Speaker Anita Among’s announcement that Parliament will pass a motion to name a street in Kampala after fallen businessman Bulaimu Muwanga Kibirige (BMK).
BMK died on Friday September 10th, aged 67. “In one way or the other, Dr. BMK touched all of us. As Parliament, we agreed that we should not allow his name to die. We will pass a motion, and name a street BMK,” Among said at BMK’s final send off at Nkoowe, Wakiso district on Sunday.
While he seconded the idea, Lukwago emphasized, in a Sunday night tweet, that naming roads in the City is Kampala Capital City Authority’s (KCCA) mandate and not Parliament’s.
“Renaming Wampeewo avenue after the fallen BMK is no doubt a brilliant idea, but the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Among ought to be reminded that Parliament shouldn’t be relegated to the level of a Kampala Capital City Authority Council (no pun intended),” he tweeted.
KCCA has in the past renamed city streets after people who made remarkable contribution to the country.
The recent name changes saw roads renamed after the late John Ssebana Kizito, a businessman and former President of the Democratic Party, and Hajji Nasser Ntege Ssebagala, former Mayor of Kampala who reigned from 2006 to 2011.
