TRAFFIC POLICE TURNS HIGHWAY CHECKPOINT TO MINTING CENTRE

Bus driver Are daily money minter for traffic officials.

At Buwama and Maya Traffic police check point for bus driver, each driver has to pay 5k on a daily basis before signing in the record book.

This extortion is carried on daily. This means that 5k at Maya and 5k at Bawama sum up to 10k daily paid to traffic official at the staged check point.

On a monthly basis a bus driver has to pay 300k.

Masaka, Mbarara, Kabale, Rukungiri, Ishaka etc has over 100 buses vying on a daily basis.

Now 300,000 x 100=30,0000,000 which is a monthly extortion to the bus industry taking the western route.

This extortion goes on even to other routes like Northern and Eastern.

If the same is happening to Bus driver on other routes, it can be estimated that over 80m are extorted from bus driver by the employed police officer on a monthly basis.

To meet the daily costs of keeping the bus on road, bus owners resort to hike fares hence squeezing road users more.

The responsible authorities must act on these errant traffic officers who have turned checkpoint into money minting centre for selfish gain.
