The war among Workers’ leaders is deepening. A board member in NOTU has revealed that 14 bank accounts have been discovered in NOTU’s name. It is not clear how the bank accounts were opened because requirements for bank account opening does not allow unless its fraud.

The discovery followed a series of investigations carried out by NOTU members, who are seeking for accountability of a total of sh15 billions that was received by NOTU.

Recently, Peter Christopher Werikhe, an MP elect for Bubulo West Constituency said his Boss wrote him a letter dated February 13, directing him to call for a General Council meeting and also prepare a good defense regarding the allegations of financial impropriety and property mismanagement.

“Be informed that, should you fail to call this meeting as directed by the litigants, for the sake of the labor movement, and NOTU’s image, I will invoke the NOTU constitution and relevant national laws to call an emergency meeting to address the same issues,” Owere said in a letter seen by the press.

Owere’s directive came following a complaint from Kanyana, who claimed that Werikhe is holding an office in an unlawful manner.

He based his argument on schedule (3) (3) of the NOTU constitution which says that “Any leader of the National Center shall not be a member of a political league or stand on any political party ticket at any level. And where any federation leader chooses to hold any party position, he/she shall relinquish his/her position in the National Center”.

The dual wants Werikhe to also resign as a Board member of the National Social Security Fund (NSSF). Through their lawyers M/S AEQUITAS Advocates wrote to Werikhe on February 9, asking him to peacefully resign.

In his Civil Suit number 117 dated April 7, that was seen by The Drone Media, Werikhe asked Court to declare that the Owere and Kanyana are not seized or clothed with any authority to evict him from office of the SG NOTU nor the Board of Directors and trusteeship, NSSF Board.

“The plaintiff prays that the judgement be entered severally and jointly against the defendants with orders of; a declaration that the defendants do not have a locus to demand for his resignation from the office of the Secretary General NOTU and to relinquish his trusteeship on the Board of Directors, NSSF, an order of Estopel, a permanent injunction, a declaration at the National Political activities are part and parcel of activities of NOTU because the defendants participated in the same elections and failed,” the suit reads in part.

“A declaration that the plaintiff’s participation in the elections is a constitutional rights thus he didn’t break any law of the Uganda Constitution and the Labour Union Act, 2006,” it adds.

Werikhe asked Court to also order Owere and Kanyana to pay him sh100m for defamation which he said has since damaged his image.

In the suit, Werikhe attached a letter from Owere which claimed that he had misappropriated funds.

“That you prepare a good defense based on evidence before the Council especially on the allegations of Financial Impropriety and property Mismanagement,” reads part of the letter.

He says that the actions of Owere and Kanyana have caused inconvenience, lowered his self-esteem in the eyes of right thinking members of the society, embarrassment and greatly impacted on him.
