The case of an Equity Bank customer where she lost ug.shs 47 million is the latest case of money fraud that has hit most Ugandan banking institutions

Recently, one of the banks customers called Rose Ahabwe said that she lost her savings of shs.47M after depositing it on her newly opened account

According to Ahebwa, she lost the money on 18th December, 2022 and a case was reported to police under the Ref: SD 44/19/12/2022 on 19th, December, 2022.

She said in a statement that she deposited the money in 2nd week of December after answering all their questions and a few days later, she found an empty account and got confused on how the money was withdrawn.

Rose told the Bank management to explain and identify who withdrew her family savings because she never registered for internet banking.

Recently she presented all the documents bank statements and other documents which clearly back up her case.

The issue was amplified by Ugandan marketer Aldrine Nsubuga who asked the public expose these fraudsters that are stealing people’s money on mobile money and banks

“If you know any one at Equity Bank, tag them. Tag management. Let them know that we are with them. Ugandans have lately learned how to fight for their rights. And if you have an account with Equity Bank, the writing is on the wall. Your money is not safe. People, let’s help the lady – it’s Shs47M we are talking about. Family savings.”

When the issue reached the different authorities that included bank of Uganda and the Bankers Association of Uganda, Equity Bank issued a statement and promised to investigate the matter to its logical conclusion

“Dear Customers, Attention is brought to the issue circulating on social media. We wish to confirm that the incident has been given due attention and is being handled with the seriousness it deserves,” Equity Bank said.

In August 2021, a similar incident happened where a customer, Edith Nakacwa’s lost her money worth shs.21 million through e-banking (eazzy funds transfer) without her knowledge.

However the bank did the needful and refunded the money because it was going to dent their reputation
