Tenants who rent Sudhir Ruparelia’s buildings cry over inflated electricity bills

By Angela Nyakuni

Sudhir Ruparelia’s tenants are crying over inflated electricity bills. The tenants say that Sudhir buys electricity from UMEME at sh800 per unit, but sells it at sh1400 to tenants.  This discrepancy has messed up their businesses; adding injuries to what COVID-19 has affected.

According to THE ELECTRICITY ACT, 1999, Ruparelia is violating the law. The Electricity Act provides for the establishment of the Electricity Regulatory Authority; to provide for its functions, powers and administration; to
provide for the generation, transmission, distribution, sale and use of electricity; to provide for the licensing and control of activities in the electricity sector; to provide for plant and equipment and for matters relating to safety; to liberalise and introduce competition in the electricity sector; to repeal the Electricity Act; to provide for a
successor company to the Uganda Electricity Board and for connected purposes.

Therefore, this means that Ruparelia is doing the work of UMEME illegally. Besides, he is cheating members of public. What is paining the tenants is that wherever they go to report such corrupt tendency; no help has be extended to them.

The object of this Act is to regulate the generation, transmission, distribution,
sale, export, import and distribution of electrical energy in Uganda.
3. Interpretation.
In this Act, unless the context otherwise requires—
(a) “apparatus” means electrical apparatus, and includes all
machines, apparatus and fittings in which conductors are used or
of which they form part;
(b) “area of distribution” means the area within which the holder of
a distribution licence is, for the time being, authorized to
distribute electrical energy.

In short, the Kampala tycoon is caught up in electricity scam. That is fraud, which authorities have always ignored; leaving innocent Ugandans at the mercy of a ruthless businessman.  It is like charging an individual extra fee that they have not used.
