Taban Amin in an $8 million scandal

By Jeremiah Kaniampiha

The Criminal Investigations Department -CID Headquarters, is interrogating the Deputy Director of ISO Taban Amin over allegations of defrauding USD 8 Million from Americans.

According to Charles Twine, the CID spokesperson, Taban has been implicated in a scandal that involved loads of money. The CID spokesman says Taban is incriminated in the participation of the crime. He says detectives at the CID Headquarters were currently grilling him.

Taban Amin is the son to former Ugandan President Idi Amin Dada. He is the deputy head of the Internal Security Organization (ISO). ISO is the intelligence branch of the country’s security apparatus.

Taban’s appointment followed a reshuffle made by President Yoweri Museveni that saw ISO boss Col Kaka Bagyenda replaced by Lt Col Charles Oluka.

“The public is hereby informed that the new Director General Internal Security Organisation (ISO) is Lt Col Charles Oluka and his Deputy is  Taban Amin. Lt Katabaazi was only promoted to Major,” Byekwaso said on Twitter, after the appointment was made.

She added, “Some press reports have referred to him as the Deputy DG ISO which is incorrect. Congratulations to Lt Col Charles on his new appointment.” Some reports had claimed that Museveni replaced Col Bagyenda’s deputy Don Mugimba with Lt Emmy Katabazi.

However, this was the second time President Yoweri Museveni was appointing the son of Idi Amin.  The first time was in 2009 and the appointment sparked controversy.

Critics said the move would help perpetuate the legacy of the former dictator. The appointment reportedly came during a meeting with Amin and other dignitaries, after President Museveni addressed a rally. Amin was just an ISO operative engaged in persuading Allied Democratic Force rebels to surrender.

He is himself a former rebel leader and once occupied Uganda’s embassy building in Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo. He later found favor with the government when he returned from exile with his fighters. Amin once led a music band that called for a third term for President Museveni.
