Kanungu District hit by hailstorm again

Farmers and residents of Kambuga Town council and Kambuga Subcounty in Kanungu district are counting losses following a hailstorm that ravaged their gardens today Tuesday 10/Jan 2023

The hailstorm that lasted for an hour started around Midday, and left a trail of destruction.

Eng Sam Kajojo, The Kanungu Lc5 Chairperson has said 14 out of the 16 lower local governments are struggling to keep up.

He says the disaster committees in almost every sub county in the district have recorded disasters which have led to loss of lives and property

He has pointed out that a recent landslide in Kirima Subcounty claimed the life of a resident.

Atuhaire Margaret, A farmer in Kambuga, says her banana plantation and other gardens were badly damaged by the hailstorm.

She says the area may be hit by severe food shortages in the near future owing to the destruction left by the hail storm.

The hailstorm also deroofed Kambuga catholic church located along Zorooma hill Kambuga town council.

He however noted that appeals to the office of the Prime Minister for relief Aid have not been responded to in the past 2 months.

Kanungu district has severally suffered severe losses occasioned by hailstorms.

In October 2021   a heavy hailstorm left over 80 families in Kanungu district homeless after a devastating hailstorm ravaged the area blowing off roof tops from their houses.

A number of gardens were destroyed animals injured in Nyanga and Bihomborwa ward in Kihiihi town council.

Just months later in May 2022 Heavy rainfall characterized by strong winds destroyed several properties, including crops, schools and police structures.

Hailstones are formed when raindrops are carried upward by thunderstorm updrafts into extremely cold areas of the atmosphere and freeze. Hailstones then grow by colliding with liquid water drops that freeze onto the hailstone’s surface.
