The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has asked the police to block events of artistes and Music Promoters who do not have Tax Identification Numbers (TIN).

The new directive was announced by police spokesperson Fred Enanga during his weekly press conference that he held at the police headquarters on Monday 16th-January-2023.

The promoters were also asked to show police home residences of artistes that will be hired to perform by a promoter .

” The new directives are meant to make sure that artistes and Promoters pay URA the taxes that they are supposed to pay,” said Enanga.

Recently the tax body announced taxes that artistes and event promoters are supposed to pay. According to a recent URA memo, a person who hires a musician or performing artiste is supposed to pay withholding tax of 6 percent of the total amount paid to the performer .

For example if a promoter pays an artiste sh1,000,000. He or she is supposed to pay withholding tax of sh60,000 to URA not later than the 15th day of the month. The other taxes are Value added tax of 18 percent per ticket sold at the entrance of the event.

For example if a show is sh10,000. The promoters or event organisers are supposed to pay VAT of sh 1800 per ticket sold. The other taxes are income tax that is paid once a year after filing the promoters or artistes annual returns.

As the world is changing and technology improving, everyone starting a business or getting employed is required to register their businesses and other assets like vehicles, land and many more. All registered companies employees must pay taxes, so its hard to escape the concept of taxation. So the process of filing returns online is well explained on youtube.  Ugandan artistes are supposed to listen, watch and read in order to survive the fangs of URA.
