Church of Uganda is still fundraising?

What is the problem? Who is responsible for this discrepancy? We grew up while local churches were contributing for the Church House, but it was non-existent. Now that it is erected, news hit us that it might be auctioned.

“My mother contributed to the construction of the Church House in school and so did I! Where did all that Money go?  God knows!” says one concerned member of Church of Uganda.

Recently news hit us that former Premier Amama Mbabazi was appointed the Chairman Church House Fundraising Committee.  Imagine!
The news was that Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Dr Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu, appointed former Prime Minister, Amama Mbabazi to chair the committee fundraising for 60 billion shillings required to pay off the debt.
Apparently, Church of Uganda is struggling to clear a 60 billion shillings debt, most of which is owed to Equity Bank, used to construct a 16 storeyed building that sits along Kampala road.
While speaking during Sunday service at the Archbishop’s home in Namirembe, Kampala, Mbabazi said that his committee had not yet started the fundraising drive due to the lockdown, but promised to rally the population especially the Anglican membership to raise money for the “noble cause of Church House.”
“60 billion is a lot of money but Church of Uganda has a membership of 13 million. And I was making a calculation that if each one of us paid sh4,650, we would raise 60 billion,” he said.
“Our committee has not started work seriously because of the lockdown and other factors, but when we do start work, we just need organization to reach out to you, to everyone. No one will remain unreached to make a contribution to this noble cause of the Church House,” he added. Can you imagine? Either there is lack of seriousness or else some people have been taking away Christians’ contributions.
