Gordon Wavamunno, is still alive, said his aide on Monday afternoon. Social media has been awash with rumours of the alleged demise of Spear Motors Group’s chairman.
“These are just rumours,” said Wavamunno’s aide, Justine Nakuya. She added: “He is very alive.”
Asked to comment on reports that Wavamuno, 79, had been flown out of the country for treatment, Nakuya responded: “That is not true. He is here in his office in Kampala.”
Pressed to assist the press to talk to Wavamunno personally, Nakuya observed: “Please make an appointment and you will talk to him.”
She said Wavamunno, whose business empire spans insurance, automobile distribution, textiles, manufacturing, construction, real estate, agriculture, media, among other ventures, was already “pissed by these rumors.”
Many high profile Ugandans have severally been pronounced only for them to appear at public functions later.
Rumours about Wavamuno’s failing health have been rife in Uganda’s business community.
Wavamunno is one of Uganda’s most industrious businessmen. Wavamunno’s Spear Motors business became Uganda’s largest auto dealership after starting out in a small garage in 1973.
He is the sole distributor of Mercedes-Benz vehicles in Uganda.
The dealership is also the sole authorised dealer in Jeep, Dodge, and Chrysler automobiles and parts. In addition, Spear Motors is the sole distributor of Deutz Fahr tractors and farm machinery in Uganda. Deutz Fahr is a farm equipment manufacturer based in Treviglio, northern Italy.
Considered one of Uganda’s wealthiest people, Wavamunno owned WBS Television and has served as the honorary consul of Hungary to Uganda.
