Hope Kivengere has passed on

Hope Kivengere has passed on. The Presidential Press Secretary Nabusayi Lindah Wamboka has just posted this to confirm the death, ” the longest serving Press Secretary (1986-2001) Ms. Hope Kivengere has passed on from Nakasero Hospital. She always checked in on the Press whenever she was back home. We have lost a great civil servant. RIP HopeKivengere.” 

After serving President Museveni, Kivengere who is a renowned communicator joined the African Union and the United Nations as an advisor on the information support team.

She was also a member of the COMESA Committee of Elders from Uganda and led the COMESA Observer team to monitor the Egyptian presidential elections in March 2018.

Kivengere spent several years working in the arena of peacekeeping in conflict areas in the Eastern African region, that is Sudan and Somalia. Hands-on experience in strategic communication, focusing especially on strategic messaging to counter violent extremism. Capped with intensive work in preventing and countering violent extremism, with hands-on involvement in setting up a new institution for IGAD, the IGAD Center for Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism, in Djibouti.  At the time of her death, she involved with work to do with women in mediation.


 

Hope Kivengere was a daughter of late Festo Kivengere (1919–1988. Kivengere  was a Ugandan Anglican leader sometimes referred to as “the Billy Graham of Africa”. He played a huge role in a Christian revival in southwestern Uganda, but had to flee in 1973 to neighboring Kenya in fear for his life after speaking out against Idi Amin’s tyrannical behavior.

Kivengere had been made bishop of Kigezi and was among several bishops summoned to Amin’s quarters. Angry mobs called for their deaths. Eventually, all were permitted to leave but one, the archbishop, Janani Luwum. The others waited for Luwum to join them, but he never came out.


 

Hope Kivengere was instrumental in the “Bush War”/ the Five-year protracted war in Luwero Triangle. She reportedly planned the escape of prisoners who included Hon Jim Muhweezi and Gen Sejusa, among others from Jinja Road Police Station.
