LDU officer shot dead after he shot residents

By Angela Nyakuni

Police and the army are investigating circumstances under which a local defence personnel shot shot and killed a resident last night, injuring others before he too, was shot by his colleagues.

The incident occurred at around 11pm as the LDU enforced curfew in Masajja, Kibira. According to some residents a chapati maker was shot dead when he tried to resist being arrested before other residents heated up.

According to Luwandaga, the area LC1, chairman; one resident lost his life, another one was injured and the errant LDU was defused by being shot in the hands by his colleagues.

Ugandans now call  these officers trigger happy Local Defense Unit (LDU), they shoot people at a slight mistake, yet they are supposed to protect them.

Unfortunately these are all human beings and have emotions. This is very tragic and unfortunate event but still LDF has to be more trained and disciplined. To use personal official weapon to punish someone and make judgements is highly undesirable and again ,good and patriotic LDU personnel must be taught over and over again on using given weapons and killing others.

Using lethal weapon is only allowed in lethal danger and self defense which is not rare unfortunately in Uganda We are writing daily on very serious offenses of unruly citizens when LDU personnel use weapons in executing their duties and safeguarding law and order. If it is not for them Uganda could turn to the battlefield where each individual will decide on what is good and what not.

Larry James says, Just hope that proper considerations were taken before they were signed up. Mental health screening and aptitude testing. There is a certain level of education that inhibits one from fully understanding and carrying out orders. There are also people that should not carry weapons. RIP.
