Pole dancing spelt curse on Club Silk. Pole dancing wasn’t originally about sex whatsoever. It involved acrobatic tricks and movements utilizing a pole, but didn’t require stripping or erotic movements.

Things worsened when the proprietor Elvis Sekyanzi, duped by a temporary crowd of perverts and randy goons in the city, hired dirty dancers from Kibera Slums in Nairobi, Kenya.  The Kibera girls kukunamilaed(stripe-naked cursed) the Club Silk, which never lived to its evening future.

Well, when pole dancing had just started in Kampala, not many revelers would attend. That was because the girls had little to offer in the Club Silk.

Secondly, the lights would be turned low, making it hard to visualize what was happening on the pole;  no cameras and phones were allowed and to make it worse, the girls wore masks, while their outfits and dance moves were not appealing.

Club Silk Management seemed to have  brainstormed for an improved version of this product. The proprietor Elvis Ssekyanzi  reportedly went on a search which yielded six professional pole dancers from Nairobi’s Kibera.

As it was, the girls from Kibera redefined the concept of pole dancing to Kampalans. On the debut of the Kibera girls the setting at Silk lounge and Ocean was the same; there were no decorations to make it seem like Pole Night was about to take place.

When the emcee stepped on stage around 8:30p.m and told the crowd to “brace themselves,” no one took him seriously. In fact, the turn-up was too low at the beginning.
Most of the people had opted to watch the France/Mexico World Cup match rather than get bored by girls who “didn’t know what they were doing.”

But after watching one dancer, everyone got right onto their phones, either calling or texting and within 30 minutes, you could hardly find space to move a foot.

When the first girl stepped on stage, the crowd went wild. She didn’t have a mask like the usual girls and she got the fans excited. Instead of the hot pants the previous girls usually wore, this one simply had on a T-string and bra that covered only her nipples.

The seductive way she walked and rolled on the pole proved that she was a professional at what she was doing. And just like in the movies, she stripped bit by bit until she was naked. Yes, naked like a newborn.

And, this was simply the beginning. The rest stripped naked as well and performed moves that wouldn’t make it into a family newspaper. In short, they left nothing to the imagination. That night spelt curse for the defunct Club Silk.
