Ugandans are disturbed by the “Presidential handshake,” they are now discussing the justification of giving such an amount of money to government officials as appreciation in the context of possible irregularities and unethical conduct.

The discussion of the issue of a Shs6 billion “Presidential handshake” given by the Uganda Revenue Authority to some government officials is really hot right now.

The money was supposedly given to officials from the Uganda Revenue Authority, the ministry of justice and constitutional affairs and the ministry of finance as an appreciation for the role they played in helping Uganda win over Shs 1 trillion in a capital gains tax case against oil firms Heritage oil and Tullow oil.

Ugandans are discussing the justification of giving such an amount of money to government officials as appreciation in the context of possible irregularities and unethical conduct.

Those against this idea say, the president was misadvised because there are many Ugandans who recover money on daily basis but they are not paid beyond their salaries. Besides, it was not systematic; it was business unusual.

“We want a break on this one. We owe teachers money; we owe doctors money. Let them choose, these people earn big salaries, get bonuses. Why do they again be given billions?” Lydia Wanyoto, member of East African Community Parliament, asserted.

“The president was wrong,” panelists on Capital Gang, a talk show on Capital Fm, agreed. We are losing money on daily basis! Was Katuntu given what he recovered from UNRA or pension scheme or UBC land?
