Jailed MP Allan Ssewanyana is critically ill

Makindye West MP Allan Ssewanyana is critically ill. He is hospitalised at the Murchison Bay hospital in Luzira Prison. He was transferred from Kigo prison where he has been detained since 2021.

Uganda Prisons Service Spokesperson Frank Baine says Ssewanyana has been complaining about his health since a week ago but the situation has worsened.

Allan Sewanyana has been in prison for over a year now after they were arrested together with Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya onaccusations of terrorism, murder, attempted murder, aiding and abetting illegalities.

The press team that visited him said they were not allowed access to Luzira prison with any recording equipment. They however confirmed that Sewanyana was just carried into the room they were in by fellow inmates and could neither talk nor stand.

Uganda prisons public relations officer Frank Baine said Allan Sewanyana has been ill for about one week from Kigo prison and was transferred to murchison bay hospital in Luzira when his ulcers condition worsened. He says Sewanyana’s sickness is not worrying and he is improving.

City lord Mayor Erias Lukwago who also visited Sewanyana said the condition is very worrying. He revealed that Allan seems to be having complications with his internal organs and his feet were swollen.

He said he could not talk and only managed to scribble information about what he wanted to tell them. Lukwago said Allan Sewanyana needs to be transferred to a good referral hospital to save his life.

In April, 2022 the Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Mathias Mpuuga and other NUP leaders went to Kigo Prison to see their colleagues Hon Allan Ssewanyana & Hon Muhammad Ssegirinya. They said the two MPs were not well.

“The two MPs are visibly ill, weak, and in need of urgent medical attention,” Mpuuga said on their return from Kigo prisons.
