Sekagya to manage Red Bull Football Club

Former Uganda Cranes Captain Ibrahim Sekagya has taken over as the head coach of the club for their inaugural season in MLS Next Pro.

New York Red Bulls II is an American professional soccer team based in Montclair, New Jersey that plays in the MLS Next Pro, the third tier of the American Soccer Pyramid.

It serves as the reserve team for the New York Red Bulls.

Sekagya becomes the third Head Coach in Red Bulls II history after spending eight seasons as an Assistant Coach.

He takes over after serving for half a year as the interim coach since July 2022 following the exit of former Head Coach, Gary Lewis.

The club’s sporting Director Denis Hamlett told the media after announcing the deal that he was given the role because he guided the team for the final 17 matches of the season.

Sekagya joined the Red Bulls II coaching staff for its inaugural season in USL in 2015 after his retirement from active football. He spent more than seven and a half seasons as an Assistant Coach before he was named the Interim Head Coach on July 3, 2022.

Sekagya, 41, has been serving as an assistant coach for the last eight seasons at NY Red Bulls II and had filled in as head coach for three matches during that span.

The Ugandan now replaces Gary Lewis who parted ways with the club this week.

Sekagya is one of the few Ugandans to have had a glittering football career abroad, having won three Austrian Bundesliga titles and an Austrian Cup championship during his six season’s time at Red Bull Salzburg.

The defender who started his professional football at KCC now KCCA FC, joined the USL side, Red Bulls in 2013, making 33 appearances with the club before retiring in 2015.

On the International level, Sekagya represented Uganda where he was also the captain.

He made 8 appearances and scored one goal in Cranes’ qualifying campaign for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, as well as 3 appearances and a goal in the qualifiers for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Sekagya retired from the Cranes in March 2012, having made 35 appearances and scored three goals for the national team.
