The COVID-19 FUND

By Namara Susan

It is not clear why these individuals were chosen by his excellency the president  Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, to provide leadership of the National Response Fund to COVID-19. However, looking at this list, you are compelled to believe it was a well calculated move. See the list below:

According to the release from The COVID-19 Fund, the goal was to raise sh 170 billions. Unfortunately, it has not been realized.  Only sh 21 billions has been collected. This include motor vehicles, cash, pledges and food stuffs.

This puts people’s hopes in jeopardy because the funds collected seem very low compared to the estimated sh 170 billions. Some people say the money has to collected.

A source has told The Drone Media, “We also agreed to allow legal firms, construction shops and sites and printer shops. We cannot risk to fully open because we are still establishing on cases like the Masindi where one person tested positive from the community.”

This press release has portrayed a nasty picture. The COVID-19 might be used for other excuses. Honestly, how do you explain this mess? The food relief does not reach the targeted groups; it is heard in rumours.

Farooq Kasule says, “I cannot claim that coronavirus is not a serious threat to Uganda but the methodology of announcing new cases makes me worry whether the lockdown will soon come to an end. I cannot claim that it has turned into a scheme but I am afraid. Allah we need your intervention otherwise….”

Sheik Muzaata said this has become like a music show or promotion of sorts; people fight to be mentioned whenever President Yoweri Museveni addresses Ugandans on all media channels. The man of Allah laughed it off that even a prominent traditional leader, who shouldn’t be in such melange, his people forced the president to mention his name first. This explains the implications of the COVID-19 Fund scheme.
