UNRA OFFICIAlS IN SH 200M GHOST COMPESATION IN KUMI ROAD CONSTRUCTION

The Uganda National Road Authority (UNRA) officials are reportedly involved in a sh 200m ghost compensation in a Kumi road construction.

The UNRA officials together with LC 3 chairman and the Sub_County Chief of Kanyumu presented a government house for compensation.

The government house that was in a road reserve used to house workers of ginneries during the hey days of cotton growing in the area.

This house in contention was later on used as a school by the residents. It was located near Kanyumu trading centre about 100 metres from the center on the left side of the Mukongoro road that is currently under construction.

As it is, the protractors of this ghost compensation claimed the house belonged to individual local residents.  Yet these individuals were ghosts; they never existed but still sh200m was dispensed.

Sometimes UNRA overvalues properties where as at times it undervalues others depending on their interests.

Ine yesteryears residents of Katenga Sub-county in Mitooma District sked government to probe the procedure which Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) uses to compensate people affected by their projects.

It emerged from claims that UNRA undervalued some of the property belonging to people affected by the construction of the 11.5km Kashenyi-Mitooma.

The residents also claimed they were not compensated for some of their property which they were compelled to vacate to pave way for the road construction.

In October 2017, a 44.5km road project worth billions of money projected to increase trade between Uganda and Kenya and funded by the African Development Bank, had similar compensation issues.

Residents of Nangwasi village in Mbale district petitioned works minister Monica Azuba and Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) chief Allen Kagina over compensation.

The residents affected by the Mbale-Bubulo-Lwakhakha road works presented their petition during a consultative meeting on and handed over a document bearing their grievances. State minister for environment then Mary Goretti Kitutu was present at the meeting.
