In Luzira Over Middle East Consultants

The Drone Media Journalist, Pidson Kareire, who was arrested on Wednesday from his office, slept in Luzira after  he appeared in Makindye Court before Justice Okumu.

Mr. Kareire is accused of alleged defamation by a local labour export company Middle East Consultants, for publishing a story on his online news media about how many prospective workers were conned of their money and hardly given the intended jobs.

Human Rights Network for Journalist – Uganda (HRNJ-U) and Lawyer Daniel Walyemera are defending Mr. Pidson in what is perceived to be tramped up charges by the labour export company.

Chief Investigator of The Drone Media an online media website was Thursday charged and remanded to Luzira Prison for allegedly defaming a labour export Company.

He was remanded to luzira prison until today (Friday) when he was given a non cash bail since what he published was of public interest and not profit oriented.

Middle East Consultants limited accuses Pidson of allegedly publishing stories on the Drone Media website accusing the labour company of extorting money from desperate unemployed Ugandans to secure unavailable Jobs abroad.

The offenses related to computer misuse act are contrary to the penal code and computer misuse act. In fact, this act was challenged.

Some other people battling charges of offensive communication include Makerere university researcher Dr.Stella Nyanzi who is also accused of using her Facebook page to defame the person of the president Museveni and his late mother .

Nyanzi is being tried by Buganda road court and is currently on remand at Luzira prison since last year after she refused to apply for bail.

The computer misuse act is designed to protect computer users against wilful attacks and theft of information.

Offenses under the act include hacking, unauthorized access to computer systems and purposefully spreading malicious and damaging information.
