ROT AT SHOPRITE SHOCKS CARREFOUR

Majid Al Futtaim, the company running the Carrefour Stores franchise in East Africa, and has taken over Shoprite’s stores in Uganda, was recently shocked by the rot they found in the giant South African retailers backdoor.

The first shock in the food storage area, where perishables were kept before being put on the customer display at Shoprite Lugogo. The rotting and leaking freezers were also found.

Slugs and other vermin were also there. The staff food serving area was like the foyer to the toilet and it was as good as eating while seated in the toilets. Fumes from the lavatories freely wafted in, while mixing with the aroma of food being served.

In short, you could not guarantee the quality of fresh foodstuff that was being sold in Shoprite Stores. Much as Arabs are known to be tough task masters, the managers of Majid Al Futtaim were shocked that anyone could expose workers to such inhumane conditions.

Observers also wondered what the Labour Union representing workers there has been doing apart from negotiating for meagre pay increments every now and then. Even KCCA health inspectors that are supposed to provide oversight, were either incompetent or compromised for such a thing to have gone on for so long.

Majid Al Futtaim has taken over Shoprite Stores in Uganda after buying out the South Africans. It was during the exercise to reconfigure the stores before opening under the Carrefour Brand that the rot was unearthed.
