CAA warns the public against conmen duping them about Packages at Entebbe International Airport

By Angela Nyakuni

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has warned the public against conmen and con-women who dupe them about packages that never ever existed, and end up robbing them.

” We have noted with concern that some people with deceitful intentions are taking advantage of unsuspecting members of the public to dupe them into believing that they have received packages/parcels from abroad.  The culprits excite and convince their victims by posting photos of the alleged parcels on their Whatsapp or Facebook inbox and then solicit for money transmission via mobile money to allegedly clear the commodities,” a statement from CAA reads.

It further explains, “The Public is hereby advised to desist from dealing with such conmen who disguise themselves as workers at Entebbe International Airport, and also refrain from making any payments for cargo clearance using mobile money.  In case anyone is expecting a consignment through the airport, it is advisable to first verify with the airline that allegedly brought it or physically visit the airport to interface with the respective ground handler.”

Con artists often use the names and logos of familiar organizations to get under your guard. So how do you tell what’s legit and what’s a scam? Here are some ways to spot a bogus email:

  • It tells you to click on a link or download an attachment
  • It urges you to take immediate action
  • It asks you to “re-confirm” personal or financial information

Another sure sign an email is a scam? If you hover over the link in the email, it won’t show the official website of the supposed sender — in this case, the service website.
