Police accused of stealing sh23m from NUP offices
Police has raided offices of opposition party the National Unity Platform ( NUP ) in Kamwokya, Kampala. Reports indicate that the raid is in line with military stores following government’s move to designate the red beret as official military clothing.
After the police raid, the NUP team reportedly assessed what they lost in the raid and they allege that most of their forms with signatures for nominations were taken away.
They also allege that police took sh23 million, part of which was meant to facilitate their parliamentary candidates with nomination fees.
They further allege that police have taken so many of their branding materials including posters, banners, berets, t-shirts, pens, notebooks, etc.
The CCTV cameras were reportedly vandalized and equipment taken away. Some NUP members were arrested and were held at Kira Road Police Station. Police also arrested so many of the NUP people who were selling NUP branding materials in town.
“Instead of weakening us comrades, let these actions strengthen us and increase our resolve. Seeing the hundreds of soldiers and police officers deployed today is evidence that the dictator is so scared of us. We are not giving up. We are not giving in,” Hon. Kyagulanyi Robert posted on social media.
Despite the empty talk, police have confirmed the armed forces materials at offices. The Uganda Police Force contends that the operation at NUP sites targeted all locations illegally manufacturing, supplying, distributing, selling and using uniforms and accoutrements whose ownership and patented designs was gazetted and an exclusive preserve of the Armed Forces.
After the raid there was a briefing at CPS Kampala by the Joint Security Task Force of spokespersons, who addressed the media on the operations within the Kampala Metropolitan Policing area. They confirmed the raid of NUP offices was inline with military stores.
