Why do ladies sleep excessively while pregnant?

Think about sleep. A pregnant woman spends nine months making a baby from two cells inside her body. Her body works hard to do this. It uses her calories and energy.

It makes her sick – losing some of those calories. It keeps her awake at night. Her body prepares for feeding the expected baby. She carries the extra weight of that plus the growing baby, placenta and amniotic fluid.

Often, in top of that, she holds down her job. Of course she’s tired! She needs all the sleep she can get.

Sleeping on the left side with the legs slightly curled is considered the best sleeping position in pregnancy. This position facilitates blood flow to the heart, kidneys, and uterus, and improves the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the fetus.

How many hours of sleep should a pregnant woman? Between 7 and 9 hours of sleep each day is recommended at the age most women find themselves pregnant. (Genetics and quality of sleep can affect these numbers, but this is a good general guideline for how much shut-eye is needed.)

How does pregnancy affect sleep? Most women experience sleep problems during pregnancy. Pregnant women tend to get more sleep during their first trimesters (hello, early bedtime) but experience a big drop in the quality of their sleep. It turns out that pregnancy can make you feel exhausted all day long. It can also cause insomnia at night.
